Team Cal Challenge: Day One

October 1 was the launch of the fall challenge (you can read more about the challenge here)!

I competed in the Cypress Run 10K for the fall challenge launch. The 10K was incorporated into my Saturday training, so my goal was to run a hard but solid pace, not aiming for a PR or to win anything. I planned to focus on pacing, targeting 8 minute per mile pace, which I accomplished (though I did push the last two miles a bit as I had a lot left after the first four miles). I ended up finishing in 49:00 (which is just three seconds slower than my 10K PR set pre-pandemic), which was 15th overall and first in my gender/age group. I ended up with a nice gold medal!

In addition to the 10K I put in a little over 6 miles running and a bit of walking, a total of 14 miles yesterday. I originally committed to $2 per mile for my challenge, Sarah is challenging me by adding another $1! So just yesterday that’s $42 for me, the Fall Challenge is off to a great start!

The other accomplishment yesterday was that by finishing I completed the first challenge for the fall. My parents pledged to contribute $50 for each mile, so by finishing the 10K they will donate $300 in memory of Cal to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, Eastern Wisconsin! Thanks Mom and Dad!

At this point in addition to my participation in the fall challenge, Sarah and Jill are participating, and at least one other member of our extended family is in. I’ll post everyone’s weekly mileage totals next Sunday as part of the weekly update.
